The basic rectangular, single-storey design of a traditional ranch-style home makes this type of dwelling affordable to build and functional to live in. Sometimes, however, ranch-style homes lack the aesthetic appeal seen in other types of architecture. Here are a few ways to incorporate curb appeal and pizzazz in the design of a ranch home.
This sets the tone of the whole property. The natural beauty of a classic wood ranch-style garage door will make a bold statement. Choose from a range of woods, including hemlock, cedar, poplar and redwood. In addition to long-lasting beauty, you’ll get reliable performance.
Upscale Lighting
Wall-mounted lamps around the entrances are a popular choice, but also consider post-mounted lanterns, hanging lanterns or chandelier-style lights. Landscape lighting alongside the pathway to the front door creates a welcoming atmosphere and adds a measure of safety.
The Main Entrance
A front door with double sidelights, decorative glass and a transom window at the top will create a “wow!” factor. You could also build a gable over the entryway and frame it with pillars. A great way to add excitement to the simple roof line of a ranch style home is to have triangular gables protruding from the flat front side of the house. The straight, long roof line of a ranch home is perfect for adding multiple dormers because of the absence of pitches and angles. True dormers, as opposed to blind dormers, are cut into the roof so they provide extra space in the attic.
