Don’t Use Dying Batteries in Garage Door Remotes

The condition of the batteries in your garage door remote determines how effectively the device works. If the remote contains dying batteries, this can lead to several problems with the garage door opener. The first indication that batteries are losing strength is usually decreased range.

All garage door remotes have built-in radio transmitters, and all garage door openers have matching radio receivers. In order for a remote to have the ability to open and close a garage door, it needs to receive a strong enough signal from the radio transmitter to reach the receiver in the garage.

On top of this, the receiver also has to be able to detect the correct signal through all the other radio frequencies in the area. To send a signal strong enough for the receiver to “hear” the transmitter, a certain amount of power is required.

Over time and with use, batteries lose their charge. This affects the remote’s ability to transmit a full-strength signal. You may even find that you have to stand directly under the garage door opener before the remote works.

How to Keep New Batteries Fresh
Extend the life of new batteries by sealing them in a plastic bag and storing them in the refrigerator. Let them return to room temperature before use.

Battery Buying Tip
Buy fresh batteries. Do this by shopping at a store that has a high battery turnover (e.g., an electronics or toy store). Choose from the middle of the rack, because store workers are taught to place new merchandise at the back of display racks.
