As is the case with any industry, up-selling is a common sales strategy in the garage door industry. Up-selling means that someone tries to sell you more than you require. Here are some ways to distinguish the difference between an honest and a not-so-honest garage door repair technician or installer.

A technician from a reputable company will:

• Have a price book that contains all garage door parts and motors, so that you can be given an accurate cost for the repair work.

• Have sales literature for his company’s products, so that you can see exactly what you are paying for.

• Know what parts are in stock, so that you’re not sold something the company doesn’t have.

• Carry a supply of standard parts like motor operators, weather-stripping, hinges, rollers and springs, so that the problem can be tended to right away.

Try and identify the cause of the problem – not only the problem itself. Now, here’s an interesting twist: this is when up-selling can actually benefit the consumer. Assume one faulty roller is discovered. The technician could easily repair it and then be on his way. But, to ultimately benefit the consumer, he may suggest replacing ALL the rollers. Although this will cost the consumer more for his or her garage repair in the short term, it will ensure better performance and fewer problems in the years to come.
