Your garage door and opener will last much longer with proper maintenance. Ideally, a garage door should be professionally inspected once a year. You never know if there’s a broken spring, cable, roller or any other piece of faulty hardware. Keep your garage door parts well-maintained by following the tips below:
LUBRICATION
The springs, hinges and rollers are the most important garage door parts. If they don’t work properly, the door won’t open – and if it does – it may come crashing down. Use good quality lubricant oil and spray these parts at least four times a year. Do not use thick grease because it attracts dirt and dust.
CABLES
Frayed or worn steel cables can cause many problems. Do not attempt to replace them yourself – call a specialist company to do the job.
WEAR & TEAR
Look for evidence of wear and tear on all the garage door parts. If you have the right tools and consider yourself to be a proficient DIYer, you may be able to attend to minor repairs. But, for more complex parts like springs, always call a professional. If you handle hardware improperly, you could be seriously injured.
LOOSE BOLTS
These make it difficult for the door track to move. Even if one bolt is loose, the track could fall on your car. Check them once a month to ensure they are secure and tight.
KEEP THE FLOOR UNDER THE DOOR CLEAN
The area directly beneath the garage door should be free of leaves, cobwebs and dirt. These prevent the door from sealing solidly with the floor.
