There are some important things to think about before buying garage door openers because they are available in various sizes and styles. To ensure you purchase a product that matches your needs, it’s essential to learn all that you can. So, here’s some buying advice.
- Determine How Much Power the Door Needs: Garage door openers come in 3 different horsepower options – 1/3, 1/2 and 3/4. Will the opener be required to lift one or two doors? You will also need to consider the size of the door and the material. If you are buying an opener to lift two doors, you’ll need one with a minimum horsepower of 1/2, but if you have a single door, a 1/3 horsepower should be fine. Remember, however, that garage door openers with more power will last longer. Heavy, oversized doors will need the maximum horsepower.
- Decide on the Type of Drive System: The two main types are chain drive and belt drive. Belt-driven garage door openers lower and raise the door on rubber belts. They are also very quiet when closing and opening. Chain-driven openers lower and raise the door with metal chains. These tend to make clanging sounds when opening and closing, so they are not the best choice if you have rooms above the garage.
- How Important Is Speed? The average opening speed for garage doors is 7 inches per second. Some openers may be slower, while others may be double this speed.
